Work in process
One evening during my postgraduate studies in the UK, I had a vivid dream about my grandfather. In the dream, he showed me his new home, we talked at length, and watched the sunset together. The dream felt so real and detailed that even after waking up, I could clearly recall the scenes and emotions. Later, during a phone call with my mother, I learned that my grandfather had passed away due to a severe illness. My family, concerned about my well-being, had not told me earlier. I’ve always felt that this dream was my grandfather’s way of saying goodbye to me. Inspired by this experience, I decided to create an animation to document this extraordinary moment as a response to his farewell.
The animation is still in progress. Beyond portraying the dream and my longing for my grandfather, it also incorporates my observations about the complexities of family relationships in Chinese households. These dynamics often involve conflicts and reconciliation, reflecting a broader social issue faced by many young people in China. Rapid economic development has created a significant gap in values and perceptions of love between generations, leading to sharp tensions and conflicts. Yet, amidst these struggles, love and care remain ever-present and unchanging. Through this animation, I aim to explore these universal themes.
